SSO Launchpad is the web application and website that provides one-stop access to many of the most popular Broward online apps and resources. It also enables students and faculty to easily manage their passwords using a new self-service tool.
Initially, SSO users log in to Launchpad with their official e-mail ID or login ID from their identity provider. On successful authentication, the user details like e-mail ID, first name, last name, profile (if provided by identity provider) and default time zone are stored in Launchpad. The federated user’s password is not stored in Launchpad.
When a federated user logs in, the launchpad URL provided by the identity provider is displayed to the user for federated authentication. If the user’s e-mail domain is not in the list of allowed e-mail domains, he is redirected to his own identity provider’s page where the user enters his official e-mail ID and password.
On successful authentication, the Launchpad URL is sent to the identity provider as a SAML response and if the SAML request is authenticated by the identity provider, the federated user is successfully logged in to Launchpad with his official e-mail ID and password. The user details like e-mail ID, primary e-mail address and time zone are sent back to Launchpad as SAML responses. The default profile is then automatically assigned to the federated user as per the profile configuration in Launchpad.
In order to enable federated login in Launchpad, the identity provider must support the OASIS SAML 2.0 protocol. In addition, the identity provider must have an X.509 certificate and have HTTP Redirect binding in its metadata.
After enabling federated login in Launchpad, the user is presented with the Use Third Party Authentication link on the Launchpad login page and is redirected to the federated identity provider’s page to login. The federated identity provider then sends the SAML response to Launchpad and on successful authentication, the federated user is logged in to Launchpad with his official login ID and e-mail ID.
The federated user’s e-mail address, time zone and profile are retrieved from the SAML response by the Launchpad instance and are stored in Launchpad along with the federated user’s login ID. The federated user’s password can be reset by the federated user from Launchpad.
